This past weekend was highlighted by catches of trophy Chesapeake Bay rockfish that were 28" and longer, on board the Sawyer during its Chesapeake Bay fishing charters. The gentleman pictured below caught our first big fish of the fall. It was about 38 inches long.

The picture below shows what transpired this past Saturday, as the crew in the picture went home with four trophy Maryland striped bass that were 28 inches or longer. The biggest fish of the day was about 39 inches long and weighed 35 pounds! These guys went home happy and we hope to see them again.

We heard that there was some kind of earthquake that happened today, but we never noticed it. While everyone on shore was trying to find something to hold on to, we were out on one of our world-famous Chesapeake Bay fishing charters, hunting for striped bass. As you can see from the above picture, it was another successful day, as this crew limited out on Maryland rockfish in pretty short order. They did this by fishing with live bait, using light tackle and spinning reels. After that, we did some bottom fishing for white perch, which are great to eat.

The last several days featured more of the same Chesapeake Bay fishing action aboard the Sawyer, action that culminates in a full legal limit of Maryland rockfish.

We are still catching these stripers using live spot fish for bait, in a process that is more popularly known as live-lining. This can be the most challenging, yet most exciting way of fishing for striped bass.

These fish generally range anywhere from 18 to 28 inches, with some of them more than 30 inches in length, making for great action on a spinning reel!

This past week featured yet more excitement on the Chesapeake Bay, marked by nice weather, and excellent Maryland striper fishing.

Right now, our Chesapeake Bay fishing charters feature bottom fishing for spot fish that are used for live bait, followed by free-spooling those fish for striped bass. From the pictures in this post, you can see that we've been rather successful, catching our legal limits most of the time. Keep in mind that not everyone in the pictures wanted to hold up two fish :).

The fishing for Chesapeake Bay striped bass right now is white hot! Over the last few days, we've been catching our legal limit of Maryland rockfish everyday in less than an hour.

We've been catching our fish with live spot fish for bait, a technique that is more popularly known as live-lining. If you put that spot on a treble hook and toss it out, the stripers just can't resist it. The fish are all of a very healthy grade, ranging between 20 and 32 inches in length.

Today was another fabulous day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. The guys in the above picture have been out with us on Chesapeake Bay fishing charters for years, and they always seem to do really well. Today was no exception. These guys caught their fish today by using live spot for bait, a technique that is also known as live-lining. After spending a couple of hours fishing for bait, we went on out to where we've been catching our fish, and the stripers were waiting for us. Within an hour of dropping the anchor, these guys caught their legal limit of Maryland Chesapeake Bay rockfish!

By looking closely at the above picture, it may appear that they came up short of their limit, but some of them only wanted to hold up one fish. Oh, well.

June 24-27, 2011

We've seen some more great Chesapeake Bay fishing over the past few days. On Friday the 24th, we had a group of seven limit out on Chesapeake Bay stripers. It wasn't easy, as they had to catch their bait, but once they started fishing for the stripers, they started picking them up, one after the other. However, the fishing really dried up before they could finish their limit, so we had to pull our anchor and look around. Not long after that, we found birds working over numerous piles of breaking fish. Sure enough, those breaking fish were Maryland rockfish. We put over our trolling lines and started catching right away. Our crew was catching fish as fast as they could pull them. They had their limit in no time.

On Saturday, we headed down the bay to do some croaker fishing. The crew that we had with us managed to catch their legal limit of croakers. It was slow starting out, but once the sun went down, the fish started to bite like crazy. This is typical when croaker fishing. There were numerous occasions throughout the evening where everybody had a fish on at the same time.

This past Monday, the 27th, we were back to striper fishing with a great crew that came to see us for the first time. Hopefully, it won't be their last. They went fishing with us early in the morning. It took us a while to get the stripers to come to us, but once they did, we started picking away at them. Just before we finished out our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass, the fishing cut off due to a hard-running current. We pulled up our lines and went perch fishing for a while. Then, we went back to looking for the stripers, and they were ready for us. They would have eaten the bottom off of the boat if they could have. The crew pictured above caught their legal limit in very short order. It was a great time for everybody.

It was another fantastic weekend of Chesapeake Bay fishing aboard the Sawyer! The two crews pictured below both caught their legal limits of Chesapeake Bay striped bass, on a weekend where you couldn't have asked the weather to be any better.

The crew pictured above caught their legal limit of stripers with live bait. After they caught their bait, they went hunting for rockfish. They dropped their lines upon seeing a few on the meter. The fish started to bite right away and the action was non-stop until they caught their limit. Toward the end, you couldn't keep the fish off!

The next day, the crew pictured above also caught their limit of Maryland rockfish, but they really had to work for it. When we got out into the Bay, there was no current, and the fish wouldn't bite. While we waited things out, we did some perch fishing, and then we started to head down the Bay. As we were working our way down, we started seeing rockfish breaking the surface all over the place. Upon seeing this, we broke out our trolling gear and started putting out lines. Within an hour, we went from zero to a full limit of stripers. When the fish bite, the action is just non-stop!

Stripers With Live Bait!

Live-lining is back at Sawyer Charters! This group of anglers went fishing with us yesterday on the Chesapeake Bay for Maryland rockfish, and did not go home disappointed. However, unlike in prior trips, today we were using live spot fish for bait.

It took us a while to get to where we were fishing, but once we put the lines out, it didn't take long at all for this crew to limit out on Chesapeake Bay striped bass. These were some really nice fish, ranging between 18 and 24 inches in length.

Chesapeake Bay Charter Fishing

It was a fantastic weekend of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, highlighted by legal limits of Chesapeake Bay striped bass!

Thursday, June 2 was our first fishing charter in about two weeks, and the fish were there to welcome us back! The crew that we had with us that day had a great time as they caught their legal limit of Maryland rockfish in just a couple of hours worth of fishing.

Friday, June 3 was no different than the day before, as we had a group of ten anglers limit out in relatively short order. There were a few times during that trip, where we had several fish on at one time! These Chesapeake Bay striped bass ranged between 18 and 26 inches in length.

Saturday, June 4 was another excellent day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action, marked by legal limits on both our morning and afternoon charters. On our afternoon trip, we had three fish that were over 30 inches long, so there still are a few big fish around!

Maryland Rockfish Season

The trophy Chesapeake Bay striped bass season is still going strong at Sawyer Charters! The picture above shows what happened with the crew who went fishing with us on May 9. Needless to say, they had a great time.

The crew on the May 10 trip, pictured above, caught their limit of Maryland rockfish after putting in a full day. These were some really nice fish, some of which were around 40 inches in length.

May 11 was an action-packed day. After a slow start, the fish started to bite with a vengeance. They chipped away until they had their limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass. This was a great crew.

On May 12, the group pictured above went fishing with us and enjoyed non-stop fishing action, as they caught their limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish by around 11am. These guys have been fishing with us for a long time, and we're glad to have them.

The picture above shows what happened on Friday the 13th. Nothing bad at all happened, unless you're a rockfish, of course. The guys pictured above went fishing with us for the first time and limited out on rockfish in just a couple of hours of fishing. They had a great time and we were glad to have them.

From looking at the three pictures in this post, you can see that we have had some success over the last three days when it comes to catching those highly-prized Chesapeake Bay rockfish.

These three crews all caught their legal limits of Maryland striped bass. These are all very nice fish, ranging between 32 and 42 inches in length.

Today turned out to be another great day of fishing aboard the Sawyer. What you see in the picture above is another full legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish. In spite of the end result, it was slow starting out, due in part to the weather, which featured high winds, a lot of waves, and a hard-running current, none of which are favorable for fishing. However, as the wind died down due to the current slacking up, we proceeded to pick and chip away until we had our legal limit. Once the fish get hungry, they will bite as they did today!

We had two trips today, and as you can see from the two pictures in this post, we did a pretty good job of it. The picture above is from our morning trip, where this awesome crew caught their limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass by 8am! The fishing was great. We couldn't keep them off the hooks. We were catching them as we were pulling in our lines.

The picture below shows what transpired during our afternoon trip. More patience was required during this trip as these Maryland rockfish were a bit finicky. You could see them on the sonar, but they would not bite. However after waiting them out for a few hours, they eventually got hungry and we had several hook-ups, leading to the results shown in the picture below.

The picture above illustrates what happened during our morning trip for today. Our crew for this trip landed its legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass in less than two hours of fishing. These fish ranged between 30 and 38 inches in length. The weather was excellent, despite forecasts for the worst. This helped contribute to good fishing on the bay. This was a great crew and we look forward to seeing them again.

The above picture shows what happened during our afternoon trip. The fishing was every bit as good as it was in the morning, if not better. These guys nailed their limit of Maryland rockfish in about an hour. They'll be having a fish fry tonight! This was a great crew and we're looking forward to seeing them again in the near future.

We had another great crew today, who came away with a very nice haul of rockfish from the Chesapeake Bay, as can be seen in the above picture. Once again, these were some very nice fish, ranging between 30 and 40 inches in length. After catching three or four right away, the fishing slowed down quite a bit, but picked back up after the current slacked up. These guys had a lot of fun, and we can't wait to seem them come back for next time, for fishing on the Chesapeake Bay!

We had a great crew with us today that persevered in the face of rough sea conditions and a hard-running current to come away with a very nice catch. What an awesome day of fishing action! We went out on another one of our action-packed Maryland fishing charters and our crew did not go home disappointed. As you can see, they came away with some real beauties! These Chesapeake Bay stripers range between 32 and 39 inches in length. This was a great day, marked both by great weather and great fishing. As you can see from the above picture, we kicked off our 2011 Maryland striper fishing season off with a bang! It was great to get out on the Chesapeake Bay again, especially after our opening day trip that was scheduled for the day before was canceled due to extremely foul weather that came through.

The fish in the picture range between 32 and 38 inches in length. Due to local flooding, we got off to a late start, but started catching as soon as we got our lines out. After picking up two or three, we hit a dry spell for a couple of hours until the hard-running ebb current slacked up. When the current slacked up, the fishing took off again, leading to us catching our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! It was a great time on the bay, with great weather and a great crew!

Today was another fine day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action aboard the Sawyer. It didn't start out that way as we went for quite some time without anything. However, as the day progressed, the birds started to come up, along with breaking piles of Maryland rockfish. Within the space of about an hour, these fine folks pictured above caught their legal limit of Chesapeake Bay stripers! They ranged between 18 and 24 inches in length!

Here, we have a group of sixteen fishermen who went out with us this morning in search of a good time. As you can see from the picture above, that is what they got! We caught over two dozen Chesapeake Bay rockfish, along with about a dozen bluefish! We caught these fish trolling, and there were several times during the day where we had four or more lines down at once! A great day had by a great crew!

Chesapeake Bay Bluefish Action!

I heard you missed us, we're back! After being sidelined for some time due to the sluggish economy, we were back out on the Chesapeake Bay, fishing for bluefish! We didn't go home disappointed. Some of these bluefish were up to six pounds! Most of the time we were trolling, with every line going down at once on several occasions. Then, later in the evening we caught some more while bottom fishing. There's nothing like fighting a bluefish on light tackle. All of these fish were between two and six pounds, perfect for eating! Looking forward to next time!

Pictured above is our first Spanish mackerel for 2010! We caught this while fishing the Chesapeake Bay for bluefish. This one was a beauty at 24 inches long, and about 5pounds! This is an encouraging sign, as we hope to see more of these in the near future.

Today, we went down the Chesapeake Bay for some bluefish action. We, along with our group of eight, were not disappointed. It was the perfect day for bluefish hunting, with hot weather and calm water. We trolled around for a few hours, and caught about 70 Chesapeake Bay bluefish, just a few short of our legal limit. There were several times where we had every line hook up at once! These fish were not huge, but they were the perfect size for eating, about one pound each. As soon as the wind picked up out of the south, the fishing slowed down some, but by then, we already had a nice catch!

It was a beautiful day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay in spite of forecasts for high winds and nasty sea conditions. The bay was just about flat, making it easy to see piles of breaking stripers! We put out our trolling rods, and the action was wide open for most of the afternoon. This great crew pictured above easily caught their limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish, and had a lot of fun doing it. We caught a lot of smaller fish that had to be put back, but all in all, it was fun, action-packed day! Thanks a lot, guys!

Today was another great day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action! We had a group of 15 fishermen on the boat with us today, and we were once again hunting those elusive Maryland rockfish. As soon as we arrived at the fishing grounds, piles of breaking striped bass could be seen everywhere, with birds all over them, showing us where they were. We broke out the trolling gear, and by the time it was all over with, we had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! It took us all afternoon, but we got the job done! The Bay at first was quite rough due to a strong north wind, but as soon as the ebb current slowed down, the wind fell out, and at the end of the day, the Bay was like a sheet of glass! A very fitting ending to a great day of fishing!

It was another very hot day on the Chesapeake, as we left the dock bright and early in the morning with a group of eight guys. When we got to the fishing grounds, we could see piles of breaking bait fish everywhere. We broke out the trolling lines and trolled around some of those piles, but came up empty. We went to where we caught our stripers yesterday, and tried some live-lining, but to no avail. We started to move north when we started to see piles of breaking fish again. We put the trolling lines back out, and we started to catch fish! Sometimes, we had two fish on at one time! We were catching fish right along until we had one big fish on that broke the line before we could get it in the boat. Then, we also had a couple that spit the hook out as soon as they came up. Other than that, it was a great day of fishing. Our eight fishermen came up just a couple of fish short of their legal limit. They had a very nice catch!

We left the dock this afternoon with a group of eight, in search of more Chesapeake Bay fishing action, and we were not disappointed. Today was the first time this season that we caught our limit of Maryland rockfish on live bait! When we arrived at the fishing grounds, we could see the stripers on our sonar stacked right up, perfect conditions for fishing with live bait! Within just two hours of fishing, we had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! They all ranged between 18 and 24inches in length.

Boy, was it hot today or what? We left Hoopers Island bright and early today on one of our world famous Maryland fishing charters. Fortunately, after a few slow days, the fishing was just as hot as the weather! As soon as we got out into the Chesapeake Bay, we saw piles of stripers breaking the water surface everywhere! We put out our trolling lines, and started catching almost right away! Within just a few hours, our group of seven fishermen had their limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish! A couple of times, we had three fish on at one time! They were all beautiful fish, ranging between 19 and 27 inches in length! These guys had a blast and we hope to see them again soon!

We left Hoopers Island early this afternoon on one of our Maryland fishing charters, going after those prized Chesapeake Bay rockfish. We started out fishing with live bait, but this didn't work so well due to a hard-running current against a hard wind out of the south, making the boat cut and shear, and causing one tangle after another. After trying this for about an hour, we broke out the trolling gear. Over the next few hours, we picked away until our group of nine ended up with 18 beautiful Chesapeake Bay stripers, making a full legal limit! These were some pretty fish, ranging between 18 and 28 inches in length. We got in just past sundown, so no picture was taken.

Maryland Fishing Report: June 15, 2010

After over a week of sub-par weather and fishing conditions, we were back at it on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, in hot pursuit of Maryland striped bass. Today, we were chumming, and the fishing starting out was wide open, as we caught about 15 Chesapeake Bay rockfish within the first hour. Then, we had to wait them out while the current changed direction and began to run again. We picked at them here and there until the current got running again, when we had another nice flurry of action. That was all we needed to catch a full limit of Maryland rockfish for 15 fishermen! These fish were between 18 and 24 inches in length. Everybody had a great time!

We left Hoopers Island this morning with a fine couple on one of our Chesapeake Bay fishing charters, and as has been the case recently, they came up with a pretty nice catch of Maryland striped bass! The biggest fish was 33 inches long, and another one was 30 inches in length! The first fish that we caught was on as soon as we put the first line out! You couldn't have asked the weather to be any nicer than it was! It was a great day of fishing.

Today, we were back out on the Chesapeake Bay, in hot pursuit of those Maryland rockfish. We left the dock early in the afternoon with a group of nine. Within four hours or so of fishing, we had our limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! These fish ranged anywhere from 18 to 24 inches in length. These were caught while trolling. No picture today, as we got in a bit late.

Today, we decided to take a break from the Maryland striper fishing, in favor of some Chesapeake Bay croaker fishing. We left the dock mid-afternoon, and started catching as soon as we put our lines over. As the day progressed into the evening, we moved around a bit and continued to catch. By the time it was over with, our group of seven ended up with over 120 croakers! The croaker fishing should only get better over the next few weeks! Stay tuned!

We left Hoopers Island bright and early this morning for another Maryland striper fishing adventure. It was another beautiful day with light winds, producing calm seas. Chumming was our preferred method of attack today, and it turned out to be quite successful as seen in the picture above. It wasn't fast and furious by any stretch, but we picked away until we had our full legal limit of Maryland rockfish! These fish ranged between 18 and 24 inches long. It was a wonderful day of fishing, and we'd like to thank these fine folks for joining us!

Chesapeake Bay Rockfish Report!

Due to the brutal economic conditions now prevailing, this is the first time in a week that we've been out, but as can be seen above, this one was a dandy! We left Hoopers Island early in the afternoon in search of those prized Chesapeake Bay striped bass. The weather was as good as you could ask it to be with calm seas and plenty of sunshine. The fishing was slow at first as we started out trolling. After just a handful of fish in a couple of hours, we decided to break out the chum! As soon as we switched over and started throwing out chum, it was like night and day! These Maryland rockfish would have eaten the bottom off of the boat if they could have! Within one hour of chumming, we had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish! These fish ranged anywhere from 18 to 30 inches in length, the prettiest fish you've ever seen. You can't see all the fish in the picture, but there were 22 of them for 11 people! These guys have been fishing with us for several years now, and always seem to do well! Some guys just have all the luck!

Maryland Striped Bass Fishing Charters - May 22, 2010

After a couple of weeks of sub-par weather and slow bookings, we were back at it today on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, in pursuit of some more of these awesome Chesapeake Bay rockfish! As can be seen from the above picture, the fish have already undergone the transition from the big monsters that we were catching earlier this spring to the smaller 18"-28" variety. However, now we can keep two per angler as opposed to one! Also, a lot of people prefer the taste of the smaller ones. At any rate, the fishing today was slow starting out, as we had a hard-running flood current to contend with. However, when the current slacked up some, we started to pick away at them. We ended the day with a nice catch, just a couple short of our legal limit. The fish pictured above ranged between 18 and 24 inches in length. These guys were all very happy when they left, and we look forward to seeing them again! A great crew! We are trolling for these stripers now, but soon, we expect some light tackle action with live bait. Stay tuned!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Charters - May 7, 2010

We left Hoopers Island bright and early again to catch some more of these Chesapeake Bay striped bass. It was pretty slow at first due to a lack of current. However, as soon as the current started to flow up the bay, the fish started to bite! We picked up six Maryland rockfish within a 90-minute time frame! One of them had to be thrown back because it was just two inches short. The rest of them were between 30 and 42 inches long. This was a wonderful crew and we hope that we can have them again soon!

Once again, we had another successful day of Maryland striper fishing! We left the dock bright and early this morning, and the stripers were lying in wait for us! As soon as we got our lines over, the rockfish started to bite! At one point during the trip, we had four striped bass on at one time! We got them all in the boat! We had our limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish in very short order! The fish ranged from 28 to 42 inches long! The weather was every bit as good as the fishing. Maryland Striped Bass Fishing Report - May 5, 2010

We had two Chesapeake Bay fishing charters today, and both of them were very successful! Below are pictures of both our morning and afternoon trips!

The above picture is from our morning trip. Yes, there are eight stripers in the picture, it's just that one of the guys couldn't get his high enough! This was an incredible day of Maryland fishing action! We had five rockfish in the boat before we could get all of our lines out. Once we got everything out, it wasn't long before we had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish! In fact, this is the fastest time in which we caught our limit so far this season! Of course, we had one of the best crews you could ask for! The biggest fish in the above picture is about 46 inches long! Just an incredible day of fishing! We look forward to seeing these guys again in the future!

Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass Fishing! - May 4, 2010

These guys booked their very own Maryland charter fishing adventure with us. These guys had a great day as can be seen above. The weather was even better than the fishing as we had no wind to deal with, and there was plenty of sunshine. It took a while today, but with time, we caught our limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! These fish were between 33 and 39 inches long! A very good catch.

After being off yesterday, we were back out on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay on another of our Maryland fishing charters. It was a beautiful day out, with a slight southwest breeze, and a moderate flood current. Right out of the gate, we drilled three Chesapeake Bay stripers, but then, it slacked up big time, as it was a couple of hours before we saw any more action. Then, we picked up two striped bass together, a couple of beauties, each of them 38 inches long! Then, we had to wait again, before we finally hooked up on our final fish, the biggest Maryland rockfish of the day! 41 inches long! These are some beautiful fish that these guys caught, and they already can't wait until next year to do it again!

Today, we left Hoopers Island at around 5am on another one of our Maryland charter fishing adventures. As with our other groups thus far, these guys caught their legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish. You couldn't have asked the weather to be any better than it was, with no wind and plenty of sunshine. The fishing, however didn't start out that way, as it was a couple of hours before we had our first bite. After a couple of knockdowns that didn't materialize, we caught our first one. We ended up with our limit within about three hours of when we caught our first one. This was a wonderful day of fishing for everyone involved! We look forward to seeing them again in the future.

Maryland Fishing Charters - April 29, 2010

Another great day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action! At first, we had to contend with rough seas produced by more northwest winds, but it quickly moderated. For most of the day, the weather was very good. The fishing was extremely slow starting out. We didn't land our first fish until around 11am. However, we persevered as we worked our way down the bay. When the ebb current slacked up, the fishing came alive and we proceeded to land six Maryland rockfish within a two-hour time frame! It turned out to be an excellent day of fishing! As you can see from the picture above, these folks were very happy!

Today was another very interesting day on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, as we had more challenging sea conditions to deal with. We had northwest winds approaching 30 knots, producing 4-5 foot swells while we were out on the Bay. However, in spite of this, our planer boards did not flip! Also, in spite of the weather, the fishing was excellent! We had our limit of Maryland rockfish by 11am!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing - April 27, 2010

You'd just had to have been there to appreciate how today went! We left the dock at about 5am in pursuit of those elusive Maryland rockfish. However, the conditions on the Chesapeake Bay were far from optimal. In fact, it was pretty damn rough! This was due to a heavy northwest wind and a hard-running flood current. In spite of this, we managed to pick up three beautiful Maryland stripers before we could get all of our lines out. Then, things got interesting. As we were trying to get back on the fish, one of our planer boards flipped, creating quite a mess. Anyone who has done this before knows that it is not fun. We reset everything, and tried it again, only to have the board upset again in about 15 minutes. At this point, we pulled out the planer board and kept it out of the water. The other board would not upset due to an experimental modification we had made recently. Needless to say, after today, both of the boards are now modified! After a while, we noticed that the current started to slack up, and with that, the wind began to moderate, making conditions much more manageable. It was at this point that the fishing started to pick up again. Within a couple of hours, we picked up another five Maryland striped bass, to complete our legal limit for the day! They were still biting as we were trying to get our lines up! At one point, we had three fish on at one time. This was a very exciting trip, with an excellent crew that we hope we'll be seeing again!

Maryland Striper Fishing - April 26, 2010

Today was another successful day of Chesapeake Bay striped bass fishing! It didn't start out that way as we left about a half-hour late, causing us to miss the early bite. We caught one Maryland striper right away, but then we hit about a 1-2 hour lull where we didn't catch anything due most likely to a slack current on the Chesapeake Bay. When the current picked back up, those Maryland rockfish started to bite again, and they bit with a vengeance! A couple of times during the trip, we had three Chesapeake Bay rockfish on at one time! Within an hour of when the fish started to bite, we had our limit. The biggest today was about 41 inches!

Chesapeake Bay Rockfish Report - April 25, 2010

The Chesapeake Bay fishing action continues to be hot and heavy, as the folks pictured above limited out on Maryland striped bass! This was a great group of folks who drove down late at night to get here, and were almost turned back by heavy rain and winds. We almost sent them home, but instead decided to wait it out a bit. We ended up going and as you can see, it was more than worth it! Even though there were heavy winds out of the southwest, we had a steady flood current making conditions bearable. We also had to deal with restricted visibility. However, as soon as we got there, the stripers were ready to rumble, as we started catching right away. Toward the end, we had four on at one time, and landed them all! What a great day of fishing!

Maryland Rockfish Report - April 24, 2010

These awesome folks also caught their limit of Maryland rockfish, fishing with us! As soon as we got out to the Chesapeake Bay fishing grounds, the fish started to hit. We had our limit in under two hours! A couple of times, we had two on at one time! This was a very exciting trip, and one that these guys will be talking about for some time!

We also ran a trip in the afternoon. The fishing was a bit slower, as we had to deal with stronger winds out of the southwest and an ebb current producing rough sea conditions. However, we persevered and ended up just two stripers short of our legal limit with a group of nine. No picture as we did get in late.

Look what we have here! These guys left the dock bright and early this morning, and as soon as we reached the Chesapeake Bay, the fishing was red hot and it stayed that way! These guys had their limit of Chesapeake Bay stripers in no time! The biggest fish was in the center of the picture. It was 43 inches long and about 31 pounds! The weather was gorgeous. These fine folks had a perfect day of fishing!

This picture summarizes today. You could not ask it to be any better on the Chesapeake Bay! The weather was perfect. Yes, absolutely perfect! No wind, plenty of visibility and warm temperatures. The Chesapeake Bay striper fishing was every bit as good! We caught three Chesapeake Bay rockfish before we got all of our lines out! A few times, we had two on at one time. We had our limit of Chesapeake Bay stripers by 8:30am! We were catching them as we were pulling up our lines. We couldn't keep them off! These guys were first time customers today! Hopefully, we'll be seeing them back again!

Well, we caught 'em again. What else can we say? The day got off to a rough start with a heavy south wind producing up to 3-foot swells. We caught one striper right away before we got out all of our lines. Then, we went an hour or so without a touch. As the flood current began to moderate, the wind died down and the fishing started to turn on and we started to pick at them. A couple of times we had two on at once. We ended up catching our full legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish before 10:30 am! The biggest was about 42 inches long.

Here, we have another successful day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action! These guys had their limit of Maryland striped bass before 10am! As you can see, today was another fabulous day of fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! These guys had an awesome Chesapeake Bay charter fishing experience as they landed their legal limit of Maryland striped bass! The eighth guy in the group was using the restroom at the time this picture was taken. That's why you see eight fish with seven people. These fish range between 31 and 42 inches in length! We had a strong northwest wind throughout the day, producing a 2ft. swell, 3ft. at times. This was a bit of an obstacle, but we overcame it and had our limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass before 11am! These guys had a blast and we hope to see them again!

We are back in action at Sawyer Charters for 2010, and so are these awesome Maryland striped bass! This fine group of seven left Hoopers Island with us today shortly after 5am, in search of some of those killer Maryland rockfish. At first, we had about a two-foot swell to contend with, resulting from a northwest wind. However, that did not stop us from catching two right away. After an hour or two, we picked away and caught another pair of Maryland striped bass. Then, as the strong ebb current began to moderate, the wind died down. As the water began to calm, the fishing took off as we caught two at one time, followed shortly by another to complete our full legal limit of Maryland stripers! These awesome Chesapeake Bay rockfish ranged between 31 and 40 inches in length! These fine folks were very happy, and we look forward to seeing them again!

Catching Rockfish on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - November 28, 2009

We left Hoopers Island today at around 6am in search of some more trophy Maryland striped bass on the Chesapeake Bay. The fishing was really slow starting out, with unpleasant sea conditions, produced by a heavy northwest wind. However, as the wind moderated and the current began to slack up, the fish began to bite. We picked at them, one at a time, and had a couple get away. By the time it was over with, we had put in a full day and came in just one fish short of our legal limit. These stripers ranged between 32 and 42 inches in length! No picture today as it was too dark by the time we got in.

Here, we have another group of happy customers that went out with us on the Chesapeake Bay for some BIG Maryland stripers! We left Hoopers Island at around 6am and put our lines out shortly after. We picked up a couple of the smaller rockfish right away. They were around 22 inches in length. We went out into the deep water and picked up some more striped bass of the smaller variety. After a lull in the action, we landed three at a time! Two of them were BIG Chesapeake Bay rockfish of over 40 inches in length! The other one was about 24 inches. Later on, we picked up another big striper. We had our limit of Chesapeake Bay Maryland rockfish before noon! Not all of the fish are shown in the picture above. The youngster in the center would rather admire the BIG fish next to him than hold up his own!

Maryland Striper Fishing Report - November 21, 2009

Today was another great day of Maryland striper fishing on the Chesapeake Bay! The weather was beautiful with sunshine, and a faint northwest wind through most of the day, producing calm sea conditions. We caught three fish within the first couple of hours, and then things slowed down quite a bit, as the current took off, and boat traffic increased due to a fishing tournament being held this weekend. However, we persevered and ended up once again catching our limit of these BIG Chesapeake Bay rockfish! The striped bass being shown in the picture above measured between 27 and 42 inches in length! As you can see, these guys had a great time, and we hope to see them again soon!

We left Hoopers Island again this morning with a small group in search of more Chesapeake Bay rockfish. On the way out, we spotted birds flying around everywhere. Sure enough, they were on the fish! The fishfinder was showing fish from top to bottom! After just a couple of hours of following the birds around, we had our limit once again of striped bass caught on the Chesapeake Bay! These stripers ranged between 20 and 26 inches in length! There are some bigger ones out in the deeper water, but our crew today was happy with what they had! Some people think that the smaller rockfish taste better anyway.

Today was another wonderful day of fishing action on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! This crew left Hoopers Island at around 6:30 this morning in search of some Maryland rockfish, and they did not go home disappointed! Within the first hour of trolling, we landed three big Chesapeake Bay stripers, the biggest of which was 38 inches! Then, we had a dry spell for a little while until we saw some birds working a bit north of us. Within an hour of seeing those birds, we had our limit of Chesapeake Bay Maryland striped bass! We trolled through those piles of birds, and caught quite a few rockfish between 18 and 26 inches, along with a couple of the larger ones. By noon, we had caught our limit and even thrown back a few!

Striper Fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - November 1, 2009

After another long, weather-induced absence, we were back out on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay for another exciting day of Maryland striped bass fishing action! We left the dock with a small group at around 6:30 this morning in search of some of those Maryland rockfish. The weather was not very cooperative with a 20-knot wind out of the north, rain, and cold temperatures. The fishing was not hot right away either. After going for several hours with just a couple of bites, even though the fish could be seen on the sonar, and birds were flying everywhere, we decided to pull up our lines and make a move. Sure enough, we found huge piles of birds, and they were on the fish! Within about one hour, we had our limit of Chesapeake Bay stripers! We were trolling the whole day with four lines, and once those rockfish decided to bite, it was all you wanted! The stripers seen in the above picture range between 18 and 26 inches in length!

Sure enough, it didn't take long for us to find them. Birds were flying around everywhere, showing us where they were! We trolled with six lines, and within just a couple of hours, we had our limit of Maryland striped bass! These stripers ranged between 18 and 26 inches in length, and very healthy too!

More Chesapeake Bay Bluefish Action - October 10, 2009

Today, we left Hoopers Island with a crew of 12 people in search of some great fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! We left before the sun came up and got to our fishing hole before anyone else, and proceeded to load up on bluefish! We also caught a few Maryland rockfish to go along with it. The bluefish ranged between 1 and 3 pounds. It was enough fish for everyone, as they all left happy! Also, contrary to the weather forecasts for today, the weather was absolutely beautiful.

Striped Bass and Bluefish on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - October 8, 2009

Today was another great day for us, fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! We got off to a bumpy start, with strong northwest winds producing 3-foot swells, and an ebb current that just would not quit. The fishing was slow at first, as we had to move a couple of times in search of those elusive rockfish. However, once the wind died down and the current slacked up, the stripers came alive! Once this happened, it didn't take long to catch our limit of rockfish! By noon, we had our limit of Maryland striped bass, along with a limit of bluefish! We're still using live spot to catch our fish, and we expect the Chesapeake Bay striper fishing to only get better in the foreseeable future!

Another Bluefish Bonanza on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! - October 3, 2009

Today was more of the same for us, as today we caught our legal limit of bluefish on the Chesapeake Bay using live bait! We also caught several striped bass, along with some sea trout, and other species. In spite of forecasts of foul weather, it turned out to be a beautiful day with sunshine and no wind! We couldn't have asked for it to be a better day! We had our limit of bluefish within two hours. We expect this to continue for at least the next couple of weeks!

Bluefish and Stripers on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - October 1, 2009

We left Hoopers Island at around 2:00 this afternoon with a group of eight. We got out to our spot soon after, and started catching fish right away. Within just a couple of hours, we caught about four dozen bluefish and about a half dozen of stripers! By this point, they decided they had caught enough. We're still catching these fish with light tackle and live bait. The bluefish were all between 1 and 3 pounds, and the stripers were pretty healthy, ranging between 20 and 26 inches in length.

Maryland Rockfish, Stripers from the Eastern Shore! - September 25, 2009

Look at what we caught today! We left Hoopers Island at around noon today in search of some striped bass on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. At first, we had a strong northeast wind to contend with, making the boat cut and shear. However, after making a move, along with the wind falling out, we started catching these beautiful rockfish. These guys had their legal limit of Maryland rockfish within an hour of when they caught the first one! The one in the middle was 33 inches long, one of the longest we caught all summer! This was all done, fishing with live bait! They left the boat very happy, and we hope to see them again!

Another great day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay! We left Hoopers Island bright and early this morning. The weather was great, with a faint breeze from the south and a moderate ebb current. We caught a bunch of bluefish on live bait and light tackle, moved, then caught some stripers! By the time it was over, we caught our legal limit of bluefish, and just a couple short of our legal limit of rockfish!

Maryland Rockfish Are Back! - September 15, 2009

The Chesapeake Bay stripers are back! We left Hoopers Island this morning at around 6am for another awesome day of fishing action! The Chesapeake Bay was beautiful today with a slight wind out of the west and a moderate ebb current, conducive to excellent fishing! We went to our first stop and caught some perfect, eating-sized bluefish, along with with four or five pretty striped bass. We then moved and caught some more rockfish and some blues, and before we knew it, we had our legal limit of Maryland stripers! The fish range between 18 and 24 inches in length, and we're catching them with light tackle and live bait! We expect the striper fishing to only improve from here on through the fall season.

Light Tackle Bluefish Action on the Chesapeake Bay - September 12, 2009

Today, we were back out on the Chesapeake Bay for another day of good fishing! We left Hoopers Island with a group of six at about 1:30 in the afternoon, and did some light tackle fishing for bluefish. We were using a combination of live bait and chum. Within four hours, we caught a legal limit! The bluefish were a bit on the small side, between 1 and 2 pounds, but perfect for the pan!

Today was a great day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay! We left the dock at 7am. The weather was beautiful with just a faint north wind. Chesapeake Bay Croaker Fishing - August 29, 2009

After a very long absence, once again, mostly weather-related, we were back out on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay doing what we do best, catching fish. As has been the case for the past few weeks, we were out in search of croakers, bottom-fishing. Our group of six left Hoopers Island a little after six in the evening. We anchored up in our normal fishing spot, and when the sun hit the trees, the fishing took off. They started biting at around 8:30, and two hours later, we had landed 140 croakers, just short of our legal limit! We also caught about a dozen bluefish. The croakers are still good size, ranging between 13 and 18 inches in length.

Maryland Fishing Report - August 15, 2009

What you see in the picture above is another red drum that we caught in the Chesapeake Bay while we were fishing for croakers. This one was 34 inches long! There's nothing like the sound of a squealing drag, and that's what this one did! It was a beautiful fish, such a shame we had to throw it back!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report - August 14, 2009

This evening, we left Hoopers Island with a group of four fishermen in search of croakers on the Chesapeake Bay. As soon as the sun went down, the croakers started biting right away. Two hours later, they had their legal limit of 100 croakers! These croakers are not quite the grade we were catching over the past couple of weeks, but still good for the pan! The average croaker was 13-14 inches in length.

Atlantic Croakers on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - August 8, 2009

We left the dock at around 6:00 this evening, in search of more croakers on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. We anchored up in our regular spot, and waited them out. As is normally the case, the croakers didn't start biting until after dark. The sea conditions weren't very good, with about a 25-knot wind out of the south, and a hard-running ebb current, causing the boat to cut and shear, making it hard to stay on the fish. However, in spite of that, we still came away with about 80 croakers, which was pretty good for the number of fishermen that we had with us.

More Croaker Action on the Chesapeake Bay - August 7, 2009

This looks just like the picture from the day before, but notice the date. Different day, same result! Another cooler full of croakers caught on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! These croakers started biting around 8:30 tonight, and by 10, the cooler was full. They had 120 croakers in all, along with about 15 bluefish. The crew went home happy, and we look forward to seeing them again.

That right there is another 160-qt. cooler filled to the top with croakers caught while bottom fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! We left Hoopers Island this evening with a group of seven people at around 7 in the evening. We returned at about 10:30 with a full cooler! These croakers were as fast as you could pull them! They ranged between 13 and 18 inches in length! We ended up with over 160 of them for the evening. The fishing was slow starting out, but as soon as the sun went down, the fishing took off!

Maryland Fishing Report - August 4, 2009

A group of seven left Hoopers Island with us at around 3 in the afternoon for some Maryland fishing action on the Chesapeake Bay. We first went after bluefish. The weather didn't cooperate as well as we would have liked, with south winds producing 3 and 4 ft. swells, along with a hard-running flood current, which when combined with the wind, usually is not conducive to good fishing. In spite of the challenging sea conditions, we still managed to catch a fair amount of bluefish. We then anchored up at sundown for some croaker fishing. Unlike the bluefish, the croakers came on strong, and within an hour, we caught about 80 of them! Not only did they catch a bunch of croakers, but look at what else they caught!

That is a red drum! The fellow you see on the right caught this on a spinning reel while fishing for croakers! It gave him a heck of a fight! This red drum was over 30 inches in length! We don't catch that many of those around here, but when we do, it is a sure treat! We still have plenty of dates available. Chesapeake Bay Croaker Fishing - August 3, 2009

This evening, we left Hoopers Island at around 7pm for some evening croaker fishing out on the Chesapeake Bay. By 10pm, six people had filled a 160-quart cooler with the biggest croakers we've seen all season! Some of these croakers were 19 inches long! The smallest one we kept was 14 inches! It was slow starting out, but as soon as the sun went down, the fishing took off. We were still pulling them in while we were getting the anchor up! Rockfish on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - July 24, 2009

Today, the group pictured above left Hoopers Island at about 1:00 in the afternoon, and spent about an hour catching live bait. After that, we went striper fishing. We picked up seven or eight rockfish within the first hour, but then it dried up for a while. We went riding around, looking for them. Every time we'd stop, we'd pick two or three. As the day started to wind down, we found some stripers breaking the water. We stopped on them, and within 20 minutes, we had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! These Maryland rockfish ranged between 18 and 26 inches in length.

And, here we have yet another very happy group of fishermen who caught their limit of rockfish on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! They caught some bait for an hour or two, and then caught their limit of stripers in under an hour! These fish range between 21 and 26 inches in length! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, in spite of showers earlier in the day. This is the first time that these folks have been with us, and we hope to see them back sometime soon.

Chesapeake Bay Bluefish and Croaker Bonanza - July 22, 2009

Today, we went down Maryland's Chesapeake Bay in search of bluefish and croakers. Right away, the bluefish were wide open as we quickly pulled in about a dozen or so. Then, the current stopped running and so did the fish. We waited it out for a while, and then, they turned on again, and before long, we had almost 100 bluefish! We then anchored up for some croaker fishing and came away with about 120 of those! The bluefish were 2-3 pounds each, and the croakers were anywhere between 12 and 16 inches in length!

Maryland Striper Fishing Action - July 18, 2009

The Maryland Striper Fishing action is still hot and heavy, as we took another group out on the Chesapeake Bay this afternoon, and had our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass! We're still catching the rockfish with live bait. On our first drift, we caught 11 stripers. Then, we pulled the anchor and went up the Bay a bit, found another pile, threw some spot into the water, and caught a few more. Over the next couple of hours, we chipped away until we had our limit of 21 Maryland rockfish!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report - July 17, 2009

Today was another great day of fishing on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay for striped bass as can be seen from the above picture. This group of five left Hoopers Island at 5am, and ended up catching their legal limit of Maryland rockfish! It was very slow starting out, as there was very little in the way of current moving. However, once the current started running flood, the fishing picked up and as was the case the day before, we went from zero to legal limit in no time!

Later that afternoon, we took a large group of thirteen people out on the Chesapeake Bay for some fun, exciting, Maryland striper fishing action. It was also slow starting out, but later on, we seen piles of breaking rockfish that we chased down and threw live spot into. Over a 2-3 hour stretch, they caught their legal limit and went home happy. No picture as we did get in a bit late.

Fishing for Striped Bass on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay - July 16, 2009

Today, this large group had a whale of a time on the Chesapeake Bay, fishing for Maryland rockfish, using live bait! In all, sixteen people caught their legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass this afternoon. Some of the people in the above picture weren't paying attention because they were arguing over who had the biggest fish! It was a very interesting day, as we were stymied at first by a hard-running ebb current, which kept the spot from getting down deep to where the stripers were. However, once the tide slacked up, the fishing came on strong, and we went from zero to legal limit in about an hour! After that, we went back into the river to catch some more "volunteers" for the next trip! As can be seen from the above picture, this was a very happy group, and we hope to see them again soon.
