Maryland Charter Fishing Report

July 13-17, 2011

This past week featured yet more excitement on the Chesapeake Bay, marked by nice weather, and excellent Maryland striper fishing.

Right now, our Chesapeake Bay fishing charters feature bottom fishing for spot fish that are used for live bait, followed by free-spooling those fish for striped bass. From the pictures in this post, you can see that we've been rather successful, catching our legal limits most of the time. Keep in mind that not everyone in the pictures wanted to hold up two fish :).

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Charters

July 5-9, 2011

The fishing for Chesapeake Bay striped bass right now is white hot! Over the last few days, we've been catching our legal limit of Maryland rockfish everyday in less than an hour.

We've been catching our fish with live spot fish for bait, a technique that is more popularly known as live-lining. If you put that spot on a treble hook and toss it out, the stripers just can't resist it. The fish are all of a very healthy grade, ranging between 20 and 32 inches in length.

Chesapeake Bay Charter Fishing

Today was another fabulous day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. The guys in the above picture have been out with us on Chesapeake Bay fishing charters for years, and they always seem to do really well. Today was no exception. These guys caught their fish today by using live spot for bait, a technique that is also known as live-lining. After spending a couple of hours fishing for bait, we went on out to where we've been catching our fish, and the stripers were waiting for us. Within an hour of dropping the anchor, these guys caught their legal limit of Maryland Chesapeake Bay rockfish!

By looking closely at the above picture, it may appear that they came up short of their limit, but some of them only wanted to hold up one fish. Oh, well.

Maryland Chesapeake Bay Fishing

June 24-27, 2011

We've seen some more great Chesapeake Bay fishing over the past few days. On Friday the 24th, we had a group of seven limit out on Chesapeake Bay stripers. It wasn't easy, as they had to catch their bait, but once they started fishing for the stripers, they started picking them up, one after the other. However, the fishing really dried up before they could finish their limit, so we had to pull our anchor and look around. Not long after that, we found birds working over numerous piles of breaking fish. Sure enough, those breaking fish were Maryland rockfish. We put over our trolling lines and started catching right away. Our crew was catching fish as fast as they could pull them. They had their limit in no time.

On Saturday, we headed down the bay to do some croaker fishing. The crew that we had with us managed to catch their legal limit of croakers. It was slow starting out, but once the sun went down, the fish started to bite like crazy. This is typical when croaker fishing. There were numerous occasions throughout the evening where everybody had a fish on at the same time.

This past Monday, the 27th, we were back to striper fishing with a great crew that came to see us for the first time. Hopefully, it won't be their last. They went fishing with us early in the morning. It took us a while to get the stripers to come to us, but once they did, we started picking away at them. Just before we finished out our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay striped bass, the fishing cut off due to a hard-running current. We pulled up our lines and went perch fishing for a while. Then, we went back to looking for the stripers, and they were ready for us. They would have eaten the bottom off of the boat if they could have. The crew pictured above caught their legal limit in very short order. It was a great time for everybody.

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report

June 17-18, 2011

It was another fantastic weekend of Chesapeake Bay fishing aboard the Sawyer! The two crews pictured below both caught their legal limits of Chesapeake Bay striped bass, on a weekend where you couldn't have asked the weather to be any better.

The crew pictured above caught their legal limit of stripers with live bait. After they caught their bait, they went hunting for rockfish. They dropped their lines upon seeing a few on the meter. The fish started to bite right away and the action was non-stop until they caught their limit. Toward the end, you couldn't keep the fish off!

The next day, the crew pictured above also caught their limit of Maryland rockfish, but they really had to work for it. When we got out into the Bay, there was no current, and the fish wouldn't bite. While we waited things out, we did some perch fishing, and then we started to head down the Bay. As we were working our way down, we started seeing rockfish breaking the surface all over the place. Upon seeing this, we broke out our trolling gear and started putting out lines. Within an hour, we went from zero to a full limit of stripers. When the fish bite, the action is just non-stop!

Stripers With Live Bait!

Live-lining is back at Sawyer Charters! This group of anglers went fishing with us yesterday on the Chesapeake Bay for Maryland rockfish, and did not go home disappointed. However, unlike in prior trips, today we were using live spot fish for bait.

It took us a while to get to where we were fishing, but once we put the lines out, it didn't take long at all for this crew to limit out on Chesapeake Bay striped bass. These were some really nice fish, ranging between 18 and 24 inches in length.

Chesapeake Bay Charter Fishing

June 2-4, 2011

It was a fantastic weekend of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, highlighted by legal limits of Chesapeake Bay striped bass!

Thursday, June 2 was our first fishing charter in about two weeks, and the fish were there to welcome us back! The crew that we had with us that day had a great time as they caught their legal limit of Maryland rockfish in just a couple of hours worth of fishing.

Friday, June 3 was no different than the day before, as we had a group of ten anglers limit out in relatively short order. There were a few times during that trip, where we had several fish on at one time! These Chesapeake Bay striped bass ranged between 18 and 26 inches in length.

Saturday, June 4 was another excellent day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action, marked by legal limits on both our morning and afternoon charters. On our afternoon trip, we had three fish that were over 30 inches long, so there still are a few big fish around!
